executive summary
smart Home Device Monitoring System can be access
through SMS, Bluetooth, and Android Application installed in the home owners’
smart phones, and tablets. It is a system where owners can switch ON/OFF home
devices through SMS and Bluetooth. The owners can check the status of the
device through B4A application.
The study aims to provide an alternative for home
owners to switch and monitor their home devices automatically. With GSM
technology the owner can receive a message that will confirm the process of
switching ON/OFF of Home device.
Introduction
The GSM system is the widely used mobile technology
in use in the whole world now. It has been a successful mobile phone technology
for a various reasons including the ability to roam through the world with the
certainty of being able to operate on GSM network systems in exactly the same
concept provided billing agreements are in place.Through time humanities crave
for technology has always been updated since the creation of this technology is
the reason why many people are adopting the idea of home automation is because
that they are getting more comfort in using home automation.
The
development of digital information has led the rapid change in human lifestyle.
The use of electricity is very important as one of the main sources of energy
that are vital in today’s modern life. A
research showed that the households in the province already observed electrical
energy conservation measures primarily to lessen electrical bill/cut down on
expenses. There are, however, considerable potentials for more efficient
electrical energy utilization practices among such households based on the
proportion of the households which do not yet practice conservation measures,
namely scheduling of appliance use (100%), not overheating/overcooling rooms
(84.9%), scheduling home energy audit (84.7%), selecting energy efficient
appliances (84.4%), scheduling computer games only on weekends (76.9%), air
dying of clothes instead of electrical drying (66.2%), using electric fans only
when people are around (63.8%) and using fluorescent lamps instead of
incandescent lamps (55.8%) (E. See et.al, 2010). Some kind of mechanism
using available technology could be used to reduce wastage in electricity
usage.
In the present scenario there is a severe need
for Energy. Every year we witness continuous power outage all over the country.
Hence there is a need for developing methods which can use the available power
more efficiently. Much of the Energy which is wasted is because of not
switching off the appliances when not in use. Standby power loss of the devices
which constitutes 10 to 15% of the total house hold consumption is also a major
loss. Hence in this project proponents try to automate the electrical devices
throughcontrolling these devices using Bluetooth, Android Application and GSM
networks.By using home automation we can save lot of energy. If we have an
automatic control of lights and other electrical devices in our home then we
can save energy which otherwise gets wasted when they are not in use and left
on.
Statement of the Problem
Efficient
and comfort living of today’s human race is the researchers’ interests. This
development will ultimately save a lot of time especially when people don’t
have to come back for simple things such as to turn ON/OFF switches at their
home or at their office once they set out for their respective work.
Consequently, this project is a solution to the following questions:
(1) How
to turn ON/OFF Home Devices using your cellular phone?
(2) How
can you monitor the Home Devices using your cellular phone?
Objectives of the Study
The project “GSM-based Home
Devices Control System” at the title suggests is aimed to construct a control
system that enables the user to have a complete monitoring on his/her home
devices.
Specific
objectives of the project are defined as;
A. To
co-ordinate appliances and other devices through Short Message Service (SMS).
B. To effectively receive and transmit data via
SMS
C. To
eliminate the need of being physically present in any location for tasks
involving the operation of appliances within a household/office.
D. Minimize
power and time wastage.
E. Provide
a Security System that will guarantee users’ safety.
Significance of the Study
This project
will be beneficial to the following:
Power Consumer.Electricity
consumption can be lessen because of the monitoring and control mechanism.
Home Owners .Availability
of Switching and monitoring household electrical appliances remotely from their
cell phones.
Community.Safety
from accident like fire can prevented through monitoring and switching.
Researchers.This
project will help gain fundamental knowledge about GSM and Bluetooth
technology.
Scope and limitation of the Study
The
project “GSM-based Home Devices Control System” can access home device or
appliances when there is an appropriate signal. It limits its accessibility to
the owner and the administrator of the GSM device using his/her Cellphone. It
limits its scope to home management only.
§ Only
devices with electrical controlling input ports will be possible targets for
control.
§ Operation
of the controlling unit is only possible through a cell phone with SMS
messaging capabilities.
§ The
receiver must reside in a location where a signal with sufficient strength can
be received from a cellular phone network.
Figure
2.System Design
Figure 2 shows
the six major processes of the proposed Device Control and Monitoring System.
First the user must install the android application or using APK file, the user
easily generates the application in the given android phone, now after the
installation the user must register the GSM number and the desired devices that
are connected to the system. After the devices and GSM number was register the
android application is ready for use, Every devices has a status of normally
off if the user desire to turn on any of the devices, the user easily click the
switch on button and then the phone send an encrypted message to the GSM or if
the user use the Bluetooth interface the phone send data through Bluetooth that
only the Bluetooth module can receive, if the GSM module or the Bluetooth
module receive the encrypted message the Arduino decrypt it and turn it into
command if the encrypted message signals indicates “on” then then the specific
pin of the arduino must turn into high which indicate 1, after the pin turn
intohigh the Relay accept the signal from the given Arduino pin then it will
activate the AC circuit and quickly on the desire device. After the device was on the Arduino by the
use of GSM module sent back an SMS to the user as feedback or notification that
the device was already on.
RESULTS
AND DISCUSSIONS
The process between the android application
and GSM provides a high degree of assurance that the process may react quickly
as the user use the android application for switching on and off which met
predetermined specifications and quality attributes. In this chapter results of
the system’s methods are discussed.
Data
Gathered
From the data gathered
about the existing system we found that it is useful for any household
requiring for convenient and safety matters, Data gathered was analyzed in
order to identify users, functional, non-functional, software and hardware
requirements that guided the design and implementation of Device Control and Monitoring System
process.
These are statements, in a
natural language, of what services in what services the system is expected to
provide and the constraints under which it must operate. Below are the user
requirements for the system;
1. Allow Smartphone’s User to use android application
for switching on and off through text by encrypted SMS.
2. The application can provide logs in every feedback
from the given system.
3. The user shall expect more accurate result of the
application from the installation of it to the bottom of the process.
4. The users shall able to use the android application
at any time especially during emergency with in the place that the signal is
sufficient.
RECOMMENDATIONS
For further
recommendation for the improvement of the system, many would like to recommend
more specific and fast functionality about the Design project that could help
the technology and may benefit the users. Hence, increasing the accuracy and
reliability may be considered in the imminent time.
The Feedback or
confirmation must be accurate; the current design was feedback occurs after the
Pin of the Arduino was triggered now there is more possibility that when
confirmation comes and error occurs inside the system, Every time the user
getsthe confirmation there is no clear for the user either the devices has turn
On or turn Off, for further improvement of the system it must be safety that
the feedback will be put up after the devices has turn on or turn off, it is
more possible by the use of any sensors in the industry.
It is more efficient
for the project if it is focus in preventing wastage of energy and for the
security of every household, Hence; advancements are open to this study since
innovations and broad technology are widely seen in the
present time.
